Teaming with Microbes Terms

Herbicide- A substance for killing plants, especially weeds.
“Thanks to the herbicide, there are no more weeds.”
Compost- A mixture of decaying organic substances
“There was a lot of leaves and old plants we decided to use as compost”
Wildlife- Abounding in wildlife/undomesticated animals living in the wild
“The wildlife in the canyon is proving to be dangerous to humans”
High Nitrogen Fertilizer- Contains 5,6, or 7 times as much Nitrogen
“The high Nitrogen fertilizer has a lot more nitrogen than usual”
Horticultural- the science of cultivating garden plants
“The scientist majored specifically in horticultural”
Hypha- a cellular construction of a fungus
Aphids- any tiny soft-bodied insect of the Aphididae family
“Don’t let the bed aphids bite!”
Pesticides- a substance used for destroying plants/animals/fungus
Insecticides- substance for killing insects. “There are no more insects thanks to the insecticide”
Fungicides- substance for destroying fungi. “The fungicide made the fungi die within hours”
Herbicides- see ‘Herbicide’.
Pest- an annoying/troublesome person/animal/thing
“The pest came back into the garden and ate the fruits”
Silviculture- cultivation of forest trees “The silviculture of pine trees began well before the christmas season”
Viniculture- wine agriculture. “The wine tasted great due to the company’s renowned viniculture”
Rotolling- the process of removing all of the plan material to make room
“The plants in the garden filled entire grass, thus the gardener resorted to rotolling”
Agriculture- the production of crops/livestock/poultry.
“The food company has the best agriculture system”
NPK- Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium
Cation- positively charged ion
“The cation has more electrons”
Anion- negatively charged ion
“The anion has less electrons than usual”
Archaebacteria- mircoorganisms. Ancient form of life.
“It was astonishing to discover left over archaebacteria”
Eubacteria- spherical bacteria. Simple, undifferentiated cells with rigid walls
Animals- ant living thing other than a human being. Mammal.
“The animals escaped from the zoo”
Plants- an herb/other small vegetable growth
“The birds enjoyed eating the plants”
Fungi- eukayote single celled/multinucleate organisms that live by decomposing/absorbing organic material
“The fungi began to multiply within the wall”
Protists- single celled eukaryotes
Micrometer- 1/1000m
Flora- plant life “The flora was beginning to die due to lack of sunlight”
Fauna- animal life “You can hear all kinds of fauna in the rain forest”
Protozoa- Protists: single celled eukaryotes
Nematodes- ground worms “You have to dig deep in the ground in order to find the wriggly nematodes”
Food Web- a combination of food chains that integrate to form a network.
“The food web is similar to the circle of life”
Microarthropods- a invetebrate animal having an exoskeleton, segmented body, and jointed appendages
Photosynthesis- sunlight energy into food for plants
“In order survive the flora exudate and also undergo photosynthesis”
Exudate- secretion from plants to attract beneficials
Rhizosphere- area around the roots- 2mm
“The rhizosphere no longer exists when the roots are ripped out”
Amoeba- parasite protozoan of genus Amoeba. Able to change shape. Forms pseudopods for feeding.
Paramecia- a unicellular organism
Ciliates- any protozoan from the phylum Ciliphora
Microbes- a microorganism
Chemosynthesis- organic material formed by bacteria using energy derived from simple chemical reactions
Wax + Wane- moving to one end of the spectrum and back again
Fertilizer- any substance used to fertilize
“The compost acts as a great fertilizer”
Arthropods- any invertebrate of the phylum Anthropoda
Aggregates- cluster of soil granules not larger than a small crumb
Fodder- coarse food for livestock
“The livestock did not take to the fodder”
Pathogen- any disease producing agent (virus, bacterium, etc)
“Many medicines are created due to pathogens”
Mycorrhiza- fungus + plant: fungus lives within/outside of the plants roots
“I would hate to pick up a Mycorrhiza.”
Inhibitory- to restrain
“We need to inhibit the flora from growing to high”
Streptomycin- An antibiotic from soil actinomycete.
Ammonium- consisting/containg of NH4 or NH4+
Ecosystem- living and non-living
“The bird and the rock existed together in the ecosystem”
